About the Outback BP
Third-gen Outback, and Subaru stopped pretending it was just a raised Legacy wagon. The BP got its own identity with unique front and rear fascias, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and the EJ25 flat-four making 175 hp in naturally aspirated form. The turbo XT got 250 hp and was genuinely quick for a wagon sitting that high off the ground. Five-speed manual or four-speed auto, and the auto was the one most buyers picked because this was a road-trip car, not a track toy. The interior was comfortable in an unpretentious way. Cloth seats wore well, the driving position was high and commanding, and visibility was excellent in every direction. The BP Outback did dirt roads, highway miles, and school runs without ever feeling out of its depth.
