About the Outback BR

Fourth-gen Outback, and Subaru went bigger again. The BR rode on a stretched Legacy platform with the EJ25 flat-four making 170 hp naturally aspirated and the EJ25 turbo hitting 256 hp in the 2.5GT. The 3.6R got the EZ36 flat-six at 256 hp, smooth and torquey in a way the four-cylinders couldn't match. CVT arrived as the primary transmission, replacing the four-speed auto. Ground clearance hit 8.7 inches. The interior was more comfortable than the BP, with better noise isolation and improved materials. The BR was the Outback that fully committed to being a crossover wagon rather than a raised sedan. X-Mode wasn't here yet, but the symmetrical AWD handled snow, gravel, and rain without fuss. Subaru's best-selling era was starting.
