About the AE86
A Corolla. That's what the AE86 is: the last rear-wheel-drive Toyota Corolla, built from 1983 to 1987, and destined for complete anonymity. Then drifting happened. Keiichi Tsuchiya made the AE86 famous by sliding it sideways on mountain roads in the Pluspy video. Shuichi Shigeno put a Panda Trueno in Initial D. Suddenly a 128 hp economy car with a 4A-GE twin-cam was the most desirable chassis in Japanese motorsport. The secret was never the engine. It was the weight: 940 kg, rear-drive, perfect balance, and a willingness to rotate that made it feel alive at any speed. The AE86 proved that driving skill matters more than horsepower.
