About the Corolla E10
The first Corolla arrived in 1966 and Toyota had one goal: build a car that anyone could afford and everyone could rely on. The K engine made 60 hp from 1.1 liters, rear-wheel drive through a four-speed manual, and a curb weight under 800 kg. It was small, simple, and cheap. Toyota sold over 2 million E10 Corollas in four years, making it the best-selling car in the world at the time. The interior was basic by any standard. The driving experience was adequate. But it started every morning, it got decent fuel economy, and it didn't break. Toyota proved that building the most reliable car in its class was worth more than building the most exciting one. Fifty million Corollas later, the lesson still holds.
