About the Corolla E210
Toyota went TNGA with the E210 Corolla and suddenly the most boring car in the world had a chassis worth talking about. Multi-link rear suspension replaced the torsion beam, the 2.0-liter Dynamic Force engine made 169 hp with a thermal efficiency above 40 percent, and the hybrid option returned 50-plus mpg without driving like a penance. The hatchback looked sharp. The sedan looked like a Corolla. Both drove better than any Corolla before them by a margin that startled even Toyota loyalists. CVT was standard and simulated shift points well enough that you forgot it was there. The interior was competent, the tech was current, and the build quality was Toyota-standard. The E210 proved boring and good aren't the same thing.
