About the Corolla E90
The E90 Corolla arrived in 1987 and was the last rear-drive Corolla in most markets. The Levin and Trueno variants got the 4A-GE twin-cam at 120 hp, rev-happy and sharp in a way that economy car engines had no right being. The base 2E and 4A-F engines were efficient and forgettable. The AE92 was the one that mattered to enthusiasts, the first supercharged Corolla with the 4A-GZE making 165 hp. Front-wheel drive arrived on most variants, ending the rear-drive era that the AE86 had made famous. The E90 was a transitional generation, caught between the lightweight simplicity of the E80 and the modern efficiency of the E100. Good cars that sell for nothing because nobody's noticed them yet. That's changing.
