Toyota took the seventh-gen Hilux and made it feel like a proper truck instead of a workhorse that happened to have seats. The AN120 got a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbodiesel making 201 hp and 369 lb-ft, paired with a six-speed auto that actually shifted well. Leaf springs in the rear because some things don't need fixing, but coil springs up front smoothed out the daily driving enough that families started buying these instead of SUVs. Frame strength went up. Payload stayed serious. The ride height and approach angles meant most trails didn't require thinking twice. In markets where the Hilux sells, this generation outsold everything with a bed. Toyota didn't reinvent anything here. They just made the formula harder to argue with.
