110 hp. 810 kg. The formula that created the hot hatch segment. Volkswagen took a Golf, added a 1.6-liter fuel-injected engine, lowered it, stiffened the springs, and accidentally invented an entire category. The Mk1 GTI didn't have traction control because it didn't need it — it needed a willing driver and an empty back road. Red stripe on the grille. Plaid seats. Golf ball shift knob. Everything about this car said fun, nothing said luxury. The original driver's car for people who couldn't afford a driver's car.
