The Mk2 GTI was the bigger, heavier sequel that purists love to dismiss. 112 hp from a 1.8-liter eight-valve four-cylinder, front-wheel drive, and a five-speed manual. It was softer than the Mk1 and less raw. But the Mk2 was also the GTI that sold in numbers that made Volkswagen take the badge seriously as a permanent fixture. The 16V version turned it into something sharper. Even in eight-valve form, the Mk2 was the hot hatch that proved the segment wasn't a one-generation fluke.
