About the Golf Mk3
The Golf Mk3 arrived in 1991 and VW finally took crash safety seriously. First Golf with airbags, first with side impact protection, and the body was heavier because of it. The VR6 engine debuted here, a narrow-angle 2.8-liter six-cylinder making 174 hp that sounded unlike anything in the segment. The GTI got the 2.0-liter 8V at 115 hp, a step backward from the 16V Mk2 GTI that frustrated enthusiasts. The TDI diesel models became the fuel economy champions of Europe. Build quality varied. Early Mk3s had rust issues and interior creaks the Mk2 never had. The Cabrio sold well in the US. The estate was practical. The Mk3 was a transitional Golf, caught between the rawness of the Mk2 and the refinement of the Mk4.
