The Mk5 GTI brought the hot hatch back from the dead. After the Mk4's weight gain and identity crisis, Volkswagen returned to basics: 200 hp turbo four, six-speed manual, front-wheel drive, and a chassis that felt like it had been developed by people who actually enjoyed driving. The EA113 2.0T became one of the most tunable engines of its generation. Stock, it was quick. With a stage 1 remap, it was something else entirely. The Mk5 reminded everyone why the GTI badge mattered.
