About the Passat B4

The B4 Passat was technically a heavy facelift of the B3, but VW changed enough to justify a new designation. Between 1993 and 1997, the updated front end and revised interior brought it closer to the Audi A4 in perceived quality. The TDI diesel engine became the smart money choice in Europe — torquey, efficient, and capable of extraordinary mileage. The Variant wagon in particular became a cult favorite among practical buyers who wanted something a step above the competition without stepping into premium pricing.
