About the Passat B5
The B5 Passat was basically an Audi A4 wearing a VW badge, and everyone knew it. Longitudinal engine layout, independent suspension all around, and available 4MOTION AWD using a Torsen center diff. The 1.8T was the enthusiast pick, same tune-friendly block as every other VW of the era. The W8 was the oddity: a narrow-angle eight-cylinder that sounded fascinating and weighed too much. Manual transmission options existed and they were the correct choice. Interior quality punched well above the Passat's price. Real wood, tight tolerances, a cabin that felt like 2001's idea of luxury. Electrical gremlins were the tax. Coil packs, window regulators, and the occasional instrument cluster failure. Worth it anyway.
