About the Passat B7
The B7 Passat was technically a heavy facelift of the B6 rather than a new platform, and VW got away with it because the updates were meaningful. The 2.0 TSI with the EA888 engine made 210 hp and was more refined than the B6's unit. The 3.6 VR6 stayed at 280 hp for buyers who wanted the power. The interior got a refresh with better infotainment and updated materials. The R36 was the halo, 300 hp from the VR6 in a wagon body that looked like it belonged in a school parking lot. Sleeper credibility was high. The DSG shifted better than in the B6, and the overall driving experience was more polished. The B7 was a good car doing a holding pattern while VW developed the MQB-based B8. It held well.
