About the Passat B8
VW went upmarket with the B8 Passat and built the best mid-size sedan most people ignored. The 2.0 TSI made 220 hp with direct injection, the 2.0 TDI delivered 150 hp and 50-plus mpg for Europe. The interior was the story. Digital cockpit available, ambient lighting, materials that felt more Audi than VW. The Arteon stole the spotlight, but the B8 Passat was the better daily driver. MQB platform meant sharp handling, a composed ride, and refinement levels that surprised anyone stepping out of a Camry. The GTE plug-in hybrid combined a turbo four with an electric motor for 215 combined horsepower and 30 miles of electric range. VW positioned it as the thinking person's mid-sizer. The market was already moving to crossovers. The B8 deserved better sales than it got.
