The E36 M3 lived in the shadow of the E30 before it and the E46 after it. That's unfair. The S50/S52 inline-six made 321 hp in European trim — smooth, responsive, and eager to rev past 7,000 rpm. The chassis was softer than the E30's but more capable. The E36 was the M3 that proved the concept could scale up without losing its soul. It wasn't raw like its predecessor or perfect like its successor. It was the bridge — and bridges deserve more credit than they get.
