The E34 M5 was BMW's first statement that M cars could be grand tourers. The S38 3.8-liter inline-six made 340 hp — hand-built, naturally aspirated, with individual throttle bodies that gave it a throttle response no turbo car could match. The E34 was bigger and heavier than the E28 M5, but it was also faster, more refined, and genuinely comfortable on long drives. Five-speed manual in a car that could cruise at 250 km/h.
