About the 5 Series G30
BMW went lighter and more digital with the G30 5 Series. The B58 inline-six in the 540i made 335 hp and was one of the best engines in production. Silky, responsive, and paired with the ZF eight-speed that set the industry standard. The 530i got the B48 four-cylinder at 248 hp, adequate but not what 5 Series buyers dreamed about. The M550i ran a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 at 523 hp and was faster to 60 than the F10 M5. Let that sink in. The chassis leaned further toward comfort than the F10, which was already softer than the E60. Adaptive dampers helped. The interior was excellent, iDrive 6 was mature, and the driving position was near-perfect. The G30 was a better luxury car than sports sedan. BMW was fine with that.
