The 4th Gen Camaro SS was the last of the old-school muscle cars hiding modern hardware underneath. The LS1 5.7-liter V8 made 285 hp — modest by today's standards, massive for 1996. Rear-wheel drive, six-speed manual, and a chassis that was genuinely good when the roads were straight. T-top models let the sun in and structural rigidity out. The 4th Gen looked like a catfish and drove like it meant it. GM killed the Camaro after this generation. The aftermarket made sure the LS1 lived forever.
