Ford built the Focus Mk4 on the C2 platform and delivered the best-driving compact car nobody in America got to buy. The 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder made 182 hp and was a genuine surprise, torquey and characterful. The 2.3 EcoBoost in the ST hit 276 hp with an electronic limited-slip diff and a rev-matching system that actually worked. The chassis was outstanding. Multi-link rear, precise steering, body control that made the Golf feel boring. The interior was dominated by SYNC 3 on an 8-inch screen and the materials were competitive with anything in the segment. Ford pulled the Focus from the US market to focus on trucks and SUVs. Europe kept it and kept buying it because the Mk4 was the best car in its class. America missed out.
