About the Range Rover Classic

The original Range Rover was designed as a working vehicle that happened to be comfortable. Twenty-six years later, it was a luxury icon that happened to go off-road. That evolution — from vinyl seats and hose-down interiors to leather, wood, and air suspension — is the entire history of the luxury SUV in one model. The 3.5-liter Rover V8 gave it effortless cruising ability. Permanent four-wheel drive with a lockable center differential gave it go-anywhere capability. The two-door body lasted until 1981, when the four-door arrived and suddenly the Range Rover was a family car. A very fast, very capable family car that could tow a horse trailer through a flood. By the end of its run, the Classic had spawned a genre. Every luxury SUV that followed owes its existence to this car.
