PORSCHE 911 930 (TURBO)
About the Porsche 911 930 (Turbo)
The 930 strapped a turbocharger to the air-cooled flat-six and created the most feared Porsche of its era. The "Widowmaker" nickname was earned, not given. Massive turbo lag followed by an avalanche of boost in a car with most of its weight behind the rear axle — the 930 was genuinely dangerous in inexperienced hands. 260 hp in a car weighing 1,300 kg. The whale tail spoiler. Flared rear fenders wide enough to park a bicycle in. The 930 looked like it was going fast standing still and delivered on that promise with terrifying commitment. The four-speed gearbox (a five-speed came later) meant you had to plan your overtakes around the boost curve. The 930 was the poster car of the 1980s — parked in the driveways of Wall Street traders and wrapped around telephone poles by people who bought more car than skill. It was the first turbocharged 911, and it set the template for every Turbo that followed.
