PORSCHE 911 964
About the Porsche 911 964
The 964 was the first major evolution of the 911 — 85% new parts underneath a body that looked almost identical to the car it replaced. Coil springs replaced torsion bars. Power steering arrived. ABS became standard. The 3.6-liter flat-six made 250 hp with the new Motronic engine management. The Carrera 4 added all-wheel drive for the first time, splitting torque to the front axle via a planetary center differential. The Carrera 2 kept the rear-drive purity. The Turbo version pushed 320 hp through the widebody shell with the same terrifying boost delivery the 930 had made famous. The 964 was Porsche modernizing the 911 without admitting it needed modernizing. It drove better than any 911 before it, rode more comfortably, and stopped shorter. The RS — stripped, lightened, and stiffened — is the driver's car of the range and now commands prices that would buy a new 992 Turbo.
