Renault Sport blinked. The fourth-generation Clio RS arrived with a 1.6-liter turbo and a dual-clutch EDC gearbox. No manual. The forums erupted. The numbers were fine — 200 hp, 240 Nm from 1,750 rpm, 6.7 seconds to 100. The turbo filled in the midrange that the old F4R never had. But something was missing. The mechanical connection, the need to work the engine, the reward at the top of the rev range — gone. The 220 Trophy tried to fix it. Stiffer springs, a louder exhaust, 220 hp, and a sharper throttle map. It was the best version of a car that many wished had stayed naturally aspirated. Last of its kind. Renault hasn't made a Clio RS since.
