Toyota put the Camry on TNGA and suddenly the most beige car in America had a real chassis. The XV70 got a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine making 203 hp with thermal efficiency numbers that engineers write papers about. The hybrid combined for 208 hp and returned 52 mpg combined. But the real change was how it drove. Lower center of gravity, multi-link rear suspension, and a body that actually responded when you turned the wheel. The TRD trim added a lip kit and wheels that looked better than any Camry had a right to. The interior was fine. Not exciting, not offensive, thoroughly Toyota. The XV70 sold a quarter million units a year because it did everything adequately and some things genuinely well. That's the Camry formula, and Toyota finally made the chassis match the sales numbers.
