About the Civic Type R

Type R started on the NSX in 1992 and reached the Integra in 1995. The Civic got it in August 1997: a Japan-only three-door with a 185 PS 1.6 that revved to 8,400 rpm. Since then the badge has marked Honda's most track-focused Civic, and it has changed shape with nearly every generation. The EP3 of 2001 was built in Swindon and sold in Europe as well as Japan. The eighth generation split in two, a four-door FD2 for Japan with 225 PS and a three-door FN2 for Europe with 201 PS. The FK2 of 2015 brought the first turbocharged engine, a 2.0 with 310 PS. The FK8 that followed was the first Type R sold in America, rated at 306 hp, and Honda says it lapped the Nordschleife in 7:43.80 in April 2017, a front-drive production-car record. Today's FL5 makes 315 hp in the US and 329 PS in Europe. Every one has driven the front wheels, and every one has had a manual gearbox.
