About the Altima

The Altima is Nissan's mid-size sedan — the car that competes with the Camry and Accord by offering more powertrain variety and hoping that's enough. The first generation arrived in 1993 as a Stanza replacement with a 2.4L four-cylinder that made it one of the quicker sedans in its class. The third generation added a 3.5L V6 option with 240 hp that turned the Altima into a genuine sleeper — faster than most drivers realized or needed. The SE-R variant pushed it further with a manual transmission and sport suspension. For a brief moment in the mid-2000s, the Altima SE-R was the enthusiast's value pick in the mid-size segment. The current generation added Nissan's variable compression turbo engine — the VC-Turbo — a piece of engineering that deserves a more interesting car around it.
